Congratulations are in order for Natalie Jacob of Dutch Kills Bar in NYC, winner of ShakeStir’s March Flash Competition! Natalie’s winning cocktail was The Triple Crown.
“Refreshing flavors of red grapefruit mix well with the bitter sweetness of Averna Amaro. Spice, orange, and honey notes from the bourbon come together with lemon and the rest of of these ingredients to give you a well balanced and pleasant sipper.”
The Triple Crown
Inspiration: Inspired from several amaro cocktails, I wanted to play up the citrusy notes in all of these spirits to come up with something both bittersweet and bright. Also inspired by the bourbon and grapefruit in a Brown Derby cocktail, “Pamplemousse” was a thoroughbred racing horse, and I named the drink after a race he contended for.
Glass Type: Coupe
- 1.0 oz Spring 44 Bourbon
- 0.75 oz Averna Amaro
- 0.75 oz Combier Pamplemousse Rose Liqueur
- 0.75 lemon juice
Combine all ingredients in a tin, shake, strain, serve up in a coupe.
Quotes from the Judges
"I think this was the best collection of drinks I’ve tasted in any competition so far! Lots of spring inspiration, clearly we are all totally over winter. Great job by Natalie in reworking the Brown Derby, I thought her cocktail was delicious, and it just edged out two others that were in the running up till the last second. You might say: it was the Triple Crown by a nose." - Andy Seymour
"I am so happy about this month’s entries, the New York Shakestir community continues to come up with awesome drinks every month. I’m happy for Natalie—her Triple Crown was really balanced and used this month’s ingredients smartly to create a tasty cocktail." - Lulu Martinez
"This was the second time I was asked to judge the flash competition and the drinks this time were even better. I think it’s interesting that all of the judges gave at least some credit to the winning cocktail for the name and inspiration for the drink. Natalie did a great job of thinking through all the aspects of this one- and the drink was really good. Great job!" - Jason Littrell
